Memorial Day Celebration Information

A Day In Towne

The Memorial Day Committee is busy preparing for the 2006 observance of Memorial Day. This year's event will be held on Monday, May 29th. The events of this day are a mix of celebration combined with a respecful remembrance of our nation's war dead. The event is coordinated by the Boalsburg Village Conservancy.

The day starts promptly at 8:30 AM, when Battery B fires their cannon signaling the start of the 26th Annual Memorial Day 4 Mile Run/Walk. The participants start from Blue Spring Park, work their way through town, ascend West Main Street and Bailey Lane before reversing the course and ending up again at Blue Spring Park.

Following the run, A Day In Towne begins in earnest. Expect to encounter over 100 vendors lining Main and Church Streets where vendors will be displaying locally made crafts. Of particular interest will be the Boalsburg Garden Club's booth that will sell flowers.

Also, there will be food aplenty as several local civic organizations will have booths featuring their own specialties. The craft and food booths will continue at the Boal Museum. In addition, the Boal Museum will present a program honoring local leaders in preservation and education and tours of the Mansion and Columbus Chapel will be available throughout the day. Not to be outdone, the Heritage Museum will host children's activities throughout the day including a petting zoo and clothesline art.
On the military side, explore Confederate Civil War encampments at the PA Military Museum and experience the artillery duels (sound only) between Confederate battery at the Boal Museum and our own Battery B (Union) at the Cemetary. Throughout the day, the PA Military Museum will be putting on an antique auto show where many notable cars can be seen. "In Towne" you can see a Maypole Dance, enjoy a fruit pie contest, sample the community soup kettle (at the Township Building on East Main Street), and see a Blacksmith Shop Demonstration. In addition, the local merchants will be open for business. If this is not enough, the Boalsburg Fire Fighters Carnival will be running throughout the day with rides and food stands.

At 5:45 PM, the procession from the Diamond to the Cemetary begins. Led by a bagpiper and a military color guard, this marks the start of the 6:00 PM service. The service will feature long time Boalsburg resident and WWII veteran Earl Kesler as speaker. It is through this service that we all are reminded of the true meaning and purpose of the Memorial Day holiday.

Please come and enjoy A Day In Towne with your neighbors and help build a community of Boalsburg. As always, volunteers are needed. If you have a few hours to spare and would like to help continue this valuable Memorial Day tradition, please contact either John Wainright (466-7813) or Margaret Tennis (466-6311).
