Policing in Harris Township

Residents may have seen recent media reports about two thefts in the Township. The first occurred at the Wash World on Boal Avenue on July 14, 2014 at approximately 12:39 AM. An unknown white male stole cash/coins from the change machine. The suspect was caputred on surveillance camera and is described as a white mail possibly in his 40s or 50s diriving a white Toyota van.

The second occured at Happy Valley Refreshments on Boal Avenue between July 20 and 21, 2014. An unknown person entered the business through the window AC unit and stole cash and checks.

If you can provide any information on either of these incidents, please contact State College Police at 234-7150.

In light of these incidents, the Township wanted to provide more information on the police services we receive from State College Borough and provide an update on our year to date crime statistics.

The Township has contracted police services from State College Borough for 33 years. The amount of weekly patrol hours is determined at budget time by the Board of Supervisors. We are currently contracting for 74 hours of patrol time per week.

This does not mean that we are only receiving 74 hours of police services per week. The Township is covered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the Borough, meaning residents can contact the police anytime they need them. We use the 74 hours of contracted time for regular patrols, special traffic details (we work with the police department to conduct speed enforcement throughout the Township) and to address other non-emergency issues.

Though we've had several high profile incidents in 2014, our crime rate is actually down 41 percent since 2010. From July 22, 2013 to July 21, 2014, we've had a total of 127 reported crimes. In 2010, that number was 214. Residents who wish to see the breakdown for the entire 5 year period can contavt the Township Manager at
manager@harristownship.org or by phone at 466-6228.

What can residents do in light of these recent incidents? First, report any suspicious activity you see to State College Police (234-7150). Second, the police can work with interested residents to set up neighborhood watch programs. these programs provide an extra set of eyes for the police and can help to deter vandalism and other crimes. Residents interested in setting up a neighborhood watch program can either contact the police directly at the number listed above or the Township Office at 466-6228.

We encourage residents with questions about our police services to either contact the Township Manager at
manager@harristownship.org or 466-6228 or to attend a monthly Board of Supervisors meeting. The Board meets on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7:30 PM. All citizens are encouraged to attend.

Adopt--A-Hydrant Program

The Boalsburg Fire Company is asking for your partnership in its Hydrant Heroes Adopt-A-Hydrant program by adopting a fire hydrant close to your home or business and keeping it free of snow during the winter and free of weeds and shrubbery in the summer. Your participation in this program saves time in the fire company's incident response, and could help save property or even a life. To sign up for the program, please contact the fire company at info@boalsburgfire.com or call (814) 466-7367.
